How-To Build A Fireplace Mantel

Many people are under the impression that building a fireplace mantel can be difficult and take hours of time and hard work. But building a fireplace mantel for your home is a fun project that is easy and simple as long as you have the right tools and a little patience.

There are a few points to remember when creating fireplace mantels. You need to begin by gathering up all of the necessary supplies.

  • Hammer
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Tape measure
  • Lumber nails
  • Drill
  • Penny finish nails
  • Pencil
  • Mounting boards
  • Paint
  • Varnish

Now install the fireplace backboards. These will be used to make sure that the fireplace mantel is secured. Make sure that the backing board is attached directly to the studs inside of the wall.

When building your fireplace mantel make sure that you put together the top of the mantel first before attaching and building the rest of the mantel. Using the finish nails put together the mantel legs. After this you will have to mark the mantel position on the wall. Place the mantel in position around the fireplace after the mantel legs are assembled.

The next thing you will have to do is install the mounting boards. Mount the boards to the studs in the wall and then install the fireplace mantel. It would be easier to paint the fireplace mantel before you finish installing it. Use the finish nails and secure the mantel over the mounting boards.

The last thing you will have to do is install the scribe molding. These molding are used to cover any gaps between the mantel legs and the facing of the mantel.

Now paint your mantel with the appropriate color. If you want the wood to have a natural look to it you should use varnish. Make sure that any paint and varnish you use is of the highest quality and has the ability to withstand anything. You don’t want the paint to chip a week after you have finished putting it together.
